Not sure which crew you are, or when the cycle started? Work it out from a shift you remember
Enter one, two, or three dates you can remember and what you worked. The generator tests every crew against every possible cycle start and tells you which ones fit. Two dates in different weeks usually pin it exactly.
Shift times, hours and pattern options
A 12 hour shift schedule covers a full day with two shifts instead of three, so a team of workers rotates through days and nights to keep an operation running around the clock. This page explains how the main 12 hour shift schedules work, what they do to your hours and your health, and which one is likely to suit a given operation. Use the interactive tool to build any of them as a real calendar, or take the short quiz below to be pointed at the pattern that fits your situation.
There is no single 12 hour shift schedule. There is a family of them, and the differences between a DuPont, a Pitman and a Panama rotation decide whether you get a week off a month or a three-day weekend every fortnight, and how much of your work turns into paid overtime. Picking the wrong one for your site is an expensive mistake, so it is worth understanding the trade-offs before you commit.
What Is a 12 Hour Shift Schedule?
A 12 hour shift schedule is any rota built around twelve-hour shifts rather than the older eight-hour, three-shift model. Two shifts cover the 24-hour day: a day shift, typically 7am to 7pm, and a night shift, 7pm to 7am. Because each person works longer, fewer shifts are needed to cover the week, and most 12-hour patterns average around 42 hours a week rather than a flat 40.
The appeal is straightforward. Twelve-hour shifts mean fewer working days, more whole days off, and fewer handovers, which many operations count as a safety gain because information is passed between shifts half as often. The cost is that the days you do work are long, and once you add a commute and sleep there is very little of the day left.
Most 12-hour schedules use four crews to provide genuine 24/7 coverage, because two crews working opposite halves of a pattern can keep one shift permanently staffed, and two more do the same on the other shift. That is the structure underneath nearly every pattern on this page.
Which 12 Hour Shift Schedule Is Right for You?
The honest answer is that it depends on what you are optimising for: a long block of time off, a predictable weekend, a stable sleep routine, or the simplest possible rota. Rather than read all the way through every pattern below, you can answer a few short questions and be pointed at the one that best fits your operation and your life.
If you would rather compare them yourself, the rest of this page walks through each pattern in turn, and the interactive generator will build any of them as a full calendar with hours, overtime and printable exports.
The Main 12 Hour Shift Schedules Compared
Five patterns cover the overwhelming majority of 12-hour operations. They all use four crews and all average around 42 hours a week; the difference is entirely in how the time is distributed.
DuPont schedule
A 28-day rotating cycle: four nights, three off, three days, one off, three nights, three off, four days, then seven days off. Its signature feature is that full week off every cycle, which works out to 13 weeks off a year without spending leave. The price is a brutal 72-hour week in the middle of the cycle, containing a flip from days to nights with a single day off to make it in. Choose it if a long block of time away matters more than anything else. The full breakdown is on the DuPont schedule generator page.
Pitman schedule
A 14-day cycle of two on, two off, three on, two off, two on, three off. Unlike DuPont, shifts are fixed: if you are on nights, you stay on nights. You never work more than three shifts in a row, and every second weekend is a full three-day weekend, 26 of them a year. It is the steadiest of the rotations and the kindest to sleep, which is why it is common in policing and dispatch. See the Pitman schedule generator for the detail.
2-2-3 schedule
The Pitman rotation described by its rhythm rather than its name, and the version most workers search for. Two on, two off, three on. You will also see the identical pattern written as 2-3-2 or 3-2-2, which are the same 14-day cycle counted from a different starting day. The 2-2-3 schedule generator covers what it feels like to work and what the different names mean.
Panama schedule
The same 2-2-3 rhythm as Pitman, but with days and nights swapping every two weeks, so it adds a slow rotation to a pattern that otherwise has none. It is a middle ground for sites that want some variety between days and nights without the harshness of the DuPont hell week.
4 on 4 off
A 16-day cycle of four days on, four off, four nights on, four off. Very steady and trivially easy to remember, but it offers no long break at all, and because 16 does not divide evenly into a seven-day week, your days off drift steadily across the calendar so your weekends are never consistent.
How Many Hours a Week Is a 12 Hour Shift Schedule?
Almost all of these patterns average 42 hours a week, but none of them delivers it as a steady 42. The hours arrive in lumps, and the size of those lumps is what determines your overtime.
On a DuPont cycle the weeks run 48, 72, 48 and zero. On a Pitman or 2-2-3 cycle they run 60 and 24. Over a full year every one of these patterns lands at roughly 183 shifts and about 2,196 hours, with 182 days off. The average is identical; the experience is not.
Overtime on 12 Hour Shifts
This is the part that costs real money, and it catches out workers and employers alike. Under United States federal law, overtime is not averaged over a rotation cycle or a year. It is calculated inside a fixed, regularly recurring seven-day workweek that the employer designates, and hours over 40 inside that window earn the premium.
Because these rotations deliver their 42-hour average as heavy and light weeks, the heavy weeks push well over 40 while the light weeks cannot claw anything back. That means the total overtime bill depends heavily on which weekday the employer declares the workweek to begin. On the same rotation and the same hours, the annual overtime can vary by a factor of two or three purely from that one administrative choice. Every pattern page linked above includes a pay calculator that shows you the difference for that specific rotation.
Are 12 Hour Shifts Bad for Your Health?
I am not going to give a medical verdict, and any page that does should be read with care. What is worth understanding is what the concern actually is.
The health question around 12-hour shifts is mostly about circadian disruption rather than the length of the shift itself. Night work in general, and rotating between days and nights in particular, is associated in the occupational health literature with sleep debt, digestive problems and cardiovascular risk. This is why fixed-shift patterns like Pitman tend to be viewed more favourably than fast rotations: a permanent night worker can at least build one sleep routine and keep it, where a rotating worker is resetting their body clock every cycle.
The consistent practical advice from people who work these patterns for years is to guard sleep as though it is part of the job: blackout blinds, a fixed wind-down routine whatever the clock says, caution with caffeine in the back half of a night shift, and treating the isolated days off inside a cycle as recovery rather than errand days. Anyone with an existing heart, sleep or metabolic condition should discuss a rotating schedule with their doctor and occupational health team before taking it on.
What Is a Rotating Shift?
A rotating shift is one where you move between days and nights over time rather than staying permanently on one. DuPont and Panama are rotating patterns; Pitman and 2-2-3 are fixed, with separate day and night crews. Rotating patterns spread the unpopular night work evenly across everyone, which many crews consider fairer, but they are harder on sleep because the body never gets to settle into a single routine. Fixed patterns are kinder to sleep but concentrate the night work on the people assigned to it.
Who Works 12 Hour Shifts?
Twelve-hour shifts are standard anywhere an operation cannot stop. Chemical plants and refineries, where several of these patterns originated. Continuous-process manufacturing such as paper, steel, glass and food production. Power generation, including nuclear. Hospitals and emergency departments. Police and emergency dispatch. Water treatment, mining, security operations, casinos, airports and logistics hubs. If a job advert mentions twelve-hour shifts and four crews, it is running one of the patterns on this page.
Build Any 12 Hour Shift Schedule as a Calendar
The generator on this page builds every pattern described above. Pick a rotation and a start date and it maps a full year, colour-coded by shift, with your day shifts, night shifts and days off, your hours week by week, an overtime and pay calculator, and a time off planner. You can export the result to your phone calendar, download it as a spreadsheet to build your own 12 hour shift schedule template, or print it in black and white for a noticeboard.
Once you know which pattern you are on, the dedicated pages for the DuPont, Pitman and 2-2-3 schedules go deeper on each one, including the crew finder for working out which crew you are on and when your cycle started.
FAQ
What Is a 12 Hour Shift Schedule?
A 12 hour shift schedule covers the 24-hour day with two twelve-hour shifts instead of three eight-hour ones, usually a day shift from 7am to 7pm and a night shift from 7pm to 7am. Most versions use four crews to provide continuous 24/7 coverage and average around 42 hours a week. Common patterns include the DuPont, Pitman, 2-2-3, Panama and 4 on 4 off rotations, which differ in how they distribute the work and the time off.
What Are the Most Common 12 Hour Shift Schedules?
The five you will meet most often are DuPont, a 28-day rotating cycle with a full week off every month; Pitman, a fixed 14-day cycle with a three-day weekend every fortnight; 2-2-3, which is the Pitman rotation described by its rhythm; Panama, a rotating version of 2-2-3; and 4 on 4 off, a steady 16-day cycle with no long break. All four-crew patterns average about 42 hours a week.
How Many Hours a Week Is a 12 Hour Shift Schedule?
Almost all of these patterns average 42 hours a week, but they deliver it unevenly. A DuPont cycle runs weeks of 48, 72, 48 and zero hours; a Pitman or 2-2-3 cycle runs a 60-hour week and a 24-hour week. Over a year each comes to roughly 183 shifts, about 2,196 hours, and 182 days off.
Do You Get Overtime on a 12 Hour Shift Schedule?
Usually yes, because the heavy weeks push well over the 40-hour federal threshold and the light weeks cannot offset them. How much depends on which weekday the employer has designated as the start of its workweek, since that decides where the seven-day line falls across the rotation. On the same schedule, annual overtime can vary by a factor of two or three from that single choice, which is why each pattern page includes a pay calculator.
What Is a Rotating Shift?
A rotating shift is one where you move between day and night shifts over time rather than staying permanently on one. DuPont and Panama are rotating patterns; Pitman and 2-2-3 are fixed, using separate day and night crews. Rotating patterns share the night work evenly across everyone but are harder on sleep, while fixed patterns are kinder to sleep but concentrate nights on the crews assigned to them.
Which 12 Hour Shift Schedule Is Best?
There is no single best pattern; it depends on what you are optimising for. DuPont gives the longest block of time off but includes a punishing 72-hour week. Pitman and 2-2-3 give a predictable three-day weekend every fortnight and are easiest on sleep because the shifts are fixed. Panama adds slow rotation to 2-2-3. 4 on 4 off is the simplest to remember but never gives a long break. The quiz on this page will point you to the one that fits your priorities.
Are 12 Hour Shifts Bad for Your Health?
The concern with any twelve-hour pattern is circadian disruption more than shift length by itself, and night work in general is associated in occupational health research with sleep debt, digestive complaints and cardiovascular risk. Fixed-shift patterns tend to be viewed more favourably than fast rotations because a permanent night worker can keep one sleep routine. Anyone with an existing heart, sleep or metabolic condition should discuss a rotating schedule with their doctor before taking it on.
How Many Hours Is a 12 Hour Shift With Breaks?
A twelve-hour shift usually includes one or more unpaid meal breaks, so paid time is often eleven or eleven and a half hours even though you are on site for twelve. How breaks are counted affects your paid hours over a year: thirty unpaid minutes a shift removes about 90 paid hours annually. The exact arrangement depends on your employer and your state or local law.
What Is the 2-2-3 Rotation?
The 2-2-3 rotation is a 14-day pattern of two shifts on, two off, three on, then two off, two on and three off. It is the same schedule as the Pitman pattern, described by its rhythm rather than its name, and is also written as 2-3-2 or 3-2-2 depending on the starting day. It gives a three-day weekend every second week and never has you working more than three shifts in a row.
Can I Get a 12 Hour Shift Schedule Template?
Yes. The generator on this page builds any of the main patterns as a full-year calendar and exports it as a spreadsheet you can open in Excel or Google Sheets and use as a 12 hour shift schedule template, as a calendar file for your phone, or as a printable black-and-white version. Each pattern also has its own dedicated page with a deeper template and a crew finder.
How Do 12 Hour Shifts Provide 24/7 Coverage?
Four crews make it work. Two crews cover the day shift by working opposite halves of a pattern, so one of them is always on, and two more crews do the same on nights. Line all four up and every day of the cycle has exactly one crew on days and one on nights, with the other two off, which produces continuous coverage with no gaps. The rotation charts in the generator show this crew by crew for each pattern.
