What an age difference calculator does
An age difference calculator measures the gap between two people’s birth dates and expresses it precisely: years, months, and days. Instead of subtracting birth years in your head — which only ever gives a rough answer — it accounts for the actual months and days, so the result is exact.
It answers the questions people usually have at once: who is older, by exactly how much, and how that gap looks expressed in total days or weeks rather than years.
How to work out an age difference by hand
The method is the same subtraction you would use for any two dates:
Step 1 — Put the later birth date on top
Write the older person’s birth date underneath the younger person’s, lined up as year, month, day.
Step 2 — Subtract day, month, then year
Work from right to left: days from days, months from months, years from years.
Step 3 — Borrow when a column goes negative
If the days go negative, borrow a month and add its real number of days. If the months go negative, borrow a year and add twelve months. What remains is the exact difference in years, months, and days. The calculator above does all of this, leap years included.
Years and months vs. total days
The same gap can be read two ways, and both are useful. “Four years, two months, and ten days” is how people usually describe an age difference. The total-days figure — the same gap counted as one running number of days — is handy for anything where you want a single value, or when the two birthdays fall close together and the months-and-days breakdown feels fiddly.
Who is older, and by how much
The calculator names which of the two people is older and by precisely how much. That sounds obvious, but when two birth dates are only weeks apart it is genuinely easy to get backwards, and a precise figure settles it.
Age gaps and the “half your age plus seven” guideline
One reason people look up an age difference is to weigh it against the well-known social guideline sometimes called “half your age plus seven.” It is a conversational rule of thumb, not a rule of any kind: take a person’s age, halve it, add seven, and that is sometimes cited as the lower end of a socially comfortable range, with the same formula in reverse giving an upper end. It applies only to adults and is meant as light cultural shorthand rather than advice. The calculator can show where a given gap falls against that range so you can see the comparison for yourself.
How an age gap changes over a lifetime
A common misconception is that an age difference shrinks as two people get older. It does not — a five-year gap is always five years. What changes is the proportion. A five-year gap between a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old is enormous in relative terms; the same five years between a 50-year-old and a 55-year-old is barely noticeable. The number of years stays fixed while its significance fades.

Age difference calculator — frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the older person’s birth date from the younger person’s, working from days to months to years and borrowing when a column goes negative. The result is the exact gap in years, months, and days. Enter both dates above and the calculator does it for you.
Does an age difference change over time?
No. The number of years and months between two birth dates is fixed for life. What changes is how large that gap feels relative to the two ages — a fixed gap becomes proportionally smaller as both people get older.
What is the “half your age plus seven” rule?
It is a casual social guideline, not an actual rule: halve a person’s age and add seven to get a sometimes-cited lower end of a comfortable range. It is meant for adults and as light cultural shorthand only. The calculator can show where a gap sits against that range.
How do I find the age gap in days or weeks?
The calculator gives the gap in total days alongside the years-months-days breakdown, and that day count converts directly to weeks. A single running number is often easier to work with than years and months when two birthdays are close together.
Can I calculate the difference between any two dates, not just birthdays?
Yes. The two dates do not have to be birth dates — you can measure the gap between any two calendar dates the same way.
Which person does the calculator say is older?
It identifies the earlier birth date as the older person and reports exactly how much older they are, which is useful when two dates are only days or weeks apart and easy to mix up.
