Bible Art Journaling

Last updated: January 25, 2026 by Nicole

Bible art journaling (sometimes refered to as creative Bible journaling) is a meaningful and expressive way to connect with Scripture on a deeper level. By combining faith, reflection, and simple art, it turns your Bible into a personal space for prayer, insight, and spiritual growth. You don’t need to be an artist—just an open heart and a willingness to slow down, reflect, and respond to God’s Word in a visual and intentional way.

What is Bible Art journaling?

Bible art journaling is a creative devotional practice that combines Scripture reading with visual art and design. Using specially designed journaling Bibles with wide margins or mixed-media art journals, people illustrate verses through hand lettering, watercolor, sketching, stamping, collage, and other artistic techniques. This approach transforms Bible study into a multisensory worship experience where color, imagery, and design help passages come alive in memorable ways. You don’t need to be a skilled artist to start—simple doodles, traced elements, or washi tape can be just as meaningful as elaborate illustrations. The goal isn’t artistic perfection but rather slowing down with Scripture, meditating on God’s Word, and expressing your faith creatively. Bible art journaling creates a beautiful, personal record of your spiritual insights and serves as a form of visual prayer that engages both heart and hands in worship.

Bible Journaling Kit

To complete your bible verse journal you will need the following:

Bible Journaling Supplies

  • Free printable scripture journal (click below to print)
  • Paper to print on
  • A binder to put the journal into unless you simply staple it together.
  • Pens

Use a readymade journal.

A readymade bible journal acts as a workbook or worksheet to help you start your journaling experience. It serves as a guide enabling you to figure out the approach to begin your journey. The journal offers guidelines on the best ways of studying the scriptures and how to apply them in your day-to-day life. Furthermore, it has tags, labels, or even themed pictures you can use to note or draw the inspirations you get from reading the word of God.

Use a blank notebook or journaling bibles.

You can use a notebook to write down your notes. Blank notebooks are available in different shapes and sizes to suit your needs. Moreover, some bibles are explicitly designed with margins where you can scribble your notes in. It might feature thicker papers and margins twice the size of the conventional Bibles. However, this can have a disadvantage if you want to write more. That’s because you may end up writing or drawing all over the pages. This can make it difficult for you to understand the passages and notes.

Create a Christian journal

You can use the back of each page or add additional blank pages to your journal to keep a diary to record the moments you felt that God was present in your life. This will help you build a healthier relationship with God.

What is a scripture journal?

A scripture journal is typically a notebook or journal where you write out Scripture and then reflect on it. Unlike Bible journaling—which often happens inside a Bible and may include art—scripture journaling focuses primarily on writing and reflection, with creativity being optional.

People use scripture journals to:

  • Track themes, promises, or answered prayers
  • Write verses by hand
  • Reflect on their meaning
  • Record prayers, insights, and questions

Creative Bible Journaling Ideas and Inspiration

If you enjoy creativity, Bible art journaling can be a beautiful form of worship. Popular techniques include:

  • Hand lettering verses
  • Watercolor backgrounds
  • Coloring Bible journaling printables
  • Using acrylic paint with light prep
  • Adding collage elements

Art journaling allows Scripture to come alive visually — and often helps verses stay in your heart longer.

There is no single Bible journaling style. Some popular ideas include:

  • Writing prayers next to verses
  • Creating word art from a favorite Scripture
  • Using color to highlight themes (faith, hope, love)
  • Drawing symbols related to the passage
  • Writing letters to God in response to Scripture

Some people keep their journaling very minimal, while others fill pages with art. Both are equally meaningful.

Verse Illustration
Choose one verse and illustrate the imagery it evokes—light, water, shelter, growth, or peace. Focus on the feeling of the verse rather than perfection.

Word Art & Lettering
Rewrite a key verse using different lettering styles. Emphasize one powerful word (faith, peace, trust, love) and decorate around it.

Color-Coding Themes
Assign colors to themes (e.g., blue for peace, green for growth, gold for God’s promises) and highlight verses throughout your Bible using that system.

Use simple symbols like hearts, arrows, anchors, or shields to represent meaning. This is great for people who don’t feel artistic.

Washi Tape Margins
Add washi tape to the edge of the page and journal your thoughts over or beside it. This adds beauty without requiring drawing skills.
