For word cards, you need at least twenty-four items to fill a 5×5 card with a free space. More than that is better, because the extra items are what make the cards different from each other.

How to play bingo
Everyone gets a different card. One person calls items at random and players cover any square that matches. The first to complete the agreed pattern calls out bingo, and the caller checks their card against what has actually been called.
Agree the winning pattern before the first call. A single line, across, down, or diagonally, is the standard game. Blackout means covering the whole card and takes far longer, so it works best as a final round with a bigger prize. Four corners is the quick one.
The free space in the middle counts as already covered, which is why a 5×5 card needs twenty-four items rather than twenty-five.
Printing tips
Print one card per player and a few spares. Four cards to a page is the setting to use for a large group — it cuts paper use by three quarters and the cards stay perfectly readable.
Plain paper is fine for one game. Cardstock lasts a party. Laminating plus counters turns a set into something you can use for years, and if you laminate, dry-erase markers wipe straight off.
Choose black and white if you are printing a lot. It keeps the border and the decorations but prints in greys, which makes a noticeable difference across thirty cards.
