How to Use a Blood Pressure Log

Tracking your blood pressure regularly helps you understand your patterns, spot changes early, and share accurate information with your doctor.

When to Measure Your Blood Pressure

For the most reliable results, try to measure your blood pressure at consistent times each day:

  • Morning: Before eating, drinking coffee, or taking medication
  • Evening: Before dinner or a few hours after your last meal
  • As advised by your doctor: Some people may need additional readings

Avoid measuring right after exercise, stress, caffeine, or smoking, as these can temporarily raise your readings.

How to Measure Correctly

Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring

Keep your feet flat on the floor and your back supported

Rest your arm at heart level

Do not talk during the measurement

Take 2 readings (1 minute apart) and record both or the average

What to Record

Use the blood pressure log to track:

  • Date and time
  • Systolic (upper number)
  • Diastolic (lower number)
  • Heart rate (if available)
  • Notes (how you felt, medications, stress, etc.)

Consistent notes can help identify triggers like stress, poor sleep, or diet.

Why Keeping a Log Matters

A blood pressure log gives a more complete picture than a single reading at the doctor’s office. It helps:

  • Detect trends over time
  • Monitor how lifestyle changes or medications are working
  • Identify unusually high or low readings
  • Reduce “white coat syndrome” (higher readings at the doctor’s office)

Share Your Readings

Bring your log to your doctor’s appointments or send it ahead of time if requested. This allows your doctor to make more informed decisions about your care.

Helpful Tips

  • Try to measure at the same times every day
  • Use the same arm each time
  • Stay consistent with your routine
  • Don’t worry about occasional fluctuations—focus on overall trends
