What is Ho’oponopono?
Hoʻoponopono is a Hawaiian tradition of reconciliation and forgiveness. It can cleanse the body of resentment, bad feelings, guilt, shame, or negative thoughts.
According to the book “Ho’oponopono – Prayers & Meditations – Master Mind” by Dr. Joe Vitale & Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon, in the practice of ho’oponopono, prayers are used as a request for guidance, assistance, or to express one’s thoughts and emotions to the Divine.
According to Ulrich E. Dupree, ho oponopono is a spiritual-soul method of purification that cleanses us from fears and worries, destructive relationship patterns, and any religious dogmas and paradigms that oppose our personal and spiritual development.
Since we cannot control our thoughts many people are stuck with their negative thinking and resentment. Some people might understand the power of positive thinking and forgiveness but might not have the ability or tools to reach that stage. That is where Ho’oponopono can help us release negative thoughts and resentment.
Ho’oponopono Meaning
The Hawaiian word Hoʻoponopono means correction. You will correct or change your life from an unbalanced negative state to a balanced positive state.
Ho’oponopono Prayer
The Ho’oponopono mantra is repeated over and over as a self-healing Hawaiian prayer. This self forgivement heals you through self-love and forgiveness.
I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you.
The prayer is made up of four steps:
I love you
There is nothing as powerful as Love. Feel love for God, for the Universe, for other people, and/or for yourself.
I’m sorry
In the Ho’oponopono forgiveness prayer, you ask for forgiveness and say sorry. Some people find this very hard to do. According to Dr. Joe Vitale in the book “The Secret Prayer”, until you forgive yourself and everyone else, you will remain stuck in the same unconscious patterns and same life experiences. You are filling your body with resentment and negative energy. You will prevent good from coming into your life and in order to let it in you have to let go forgive and then give thanks. Forgiveness is sometimes really difficult. However, if you don’t forgive then you are basically punishing yourself. You are the one who lives with negative thoughts and energy in your mind and body so you are the one who is suffering. Forgiveness might be very difficult when someone has wronged you but when you forgive someone else, you are basically doing yourself a favor.
Please forgive me
According to the Ho’oponopono tradition, you say, “I’m sorry” and “please forgive me” not because you did anything wrong, but because you were unconscious of what you did or didn’t do according to Dr. Joe Vitale in the book “The Secret Prayer”. According to the tradition, our habits, limiting beliefs, and mindsets are what control us. Therefore, we are not to blame. However, we are still responsible. When we use the Hawaiin forgiveness prayer to be forgiven we are admitting that we are responsible but we had no control. For example, if you have not managed to find your perfect partner then you are basically saying: “please forgive me for my mindset which has prevented me from attracting my life partner”. If you had an issue with money, then you would say “please forgive me for my beliefs about money”
You are not feeling guilty and you are not blaming yourself but you are taking responsibility. The Ho’oponopono Hawaiin prayer is not about changing the mind of the Universe, but about changing your mind to be aligned with the Universe.
When you say “please forgive me” you must mean it.
Thank you
Until we forgive, we cannot be grateful for what we do have. Gratitude is an important step in the process. Find something to be thankful for. If you are not sure what you have to be grateful for, then see our list of things to be thankful for.
