Most moving cost calculators online aren’t really calculators. They’re lead-capture forms dressed up to look like one. You enter your details, you get a vague “$2,000–$10,000” range, and then your phone rings for the next three weeks.
This one works differently. Enter your move details, and you’ll see a real estimated range — broken down line by line — for whichever method you pick: full-service movers, a POD container, the hybrid approach (you pack, they drive), or DIY truck rental. You’ll also see all four side-by-side, so you can tell at a glance whether full-service is worth the premium for your particular move, or whether a POD will save you $3,000.
No email. No phone number. No quote requests sent to anyone.
What the calculator factors in
Moving cost isn’t one number — it’s about a dozen. The big ones are:
Distance. Under 100 miles is a “local” move, billed hourly (labor × movers × hours, plus a truck fee). Over 100 miles is a “long-distance” or “interstate” move, billed by weight × distance × per-pound rate. The per-pound rate scales with distance — about $0.42–0.62/lb at zero miles, rising to roughly $1.00–1.30/lb at 3,000 miles cross-country.
Home size and weight. A studio averages 1,800 lbs; a 2-bedroom averages 4,500; a 4-bedroom averages 10,000. If you know your actual weight from a previous move, you can override the default in the calculator for a more accurate number.
Method. Full-service movers cost the most because you’re paying for labor twice (loading and unloading) plus transport. DIY truck rental costs the least but means you’re doing every box yourself. POD containers and hybrid services like U-Pack sit between the two — they handle the drive, you handle the boxes.
Date. Moves between May 15 and September 15 cost 15–25% more than off-season moves. End-of-month and weekend moves add another 5–12%. If your timing is flexible, a Tuesday in October is the cheapest move you can book.
Specialty items. Pianos, pool tables, hot tubs, large safes, and antique furniture all have surcharges because they need extra people, equipment, or custom crating. The calculator lets you flag these individually with realistic add-on costs.
Access. Walk-up flights of stairs, long carries (truck can’t park within 75 feet of your door), and elevator reservations all add fees that aren’t in the base quote.
Add-ons. Packing service, packing supplies, storage-in-transit, furniture disassembly and reassembly, full-value insurance protection (versus the legally-required 60¢-per-pound default), move-out cleaning, vehicle transport, and tips for the crew.
What the average 2026 move actually costs
Numbers from real moves, current to 2026:
- Local studio or 1-bedroom, under 50 miles: $400–$1,200 full-service. As little as $100–$250 DIY.
- Local 2–3 bedroom, under 50 miles: $900–$2,800 full-service. $200–$700 DIY.
- Long-distance 1-bedroom, 1,000 miles: $2,200–$3,500 full-service. $1,400–$2,500 DIY one-way truck rental. $1,800–$2,800 POD.
- Cross-country 3-bedroom, 2,800 miles: $8,000–$13,000 full-service. $4,500–$7,500 DIY one-way. $5,500–$8,500 POD.
- Cross-country 4–5 bedroom, 2,800 miles: $13,000–$25,000 full-service depending on packing service, valuation, and specialty items.
If you got a quote far below the low end of these ranges, that’s a red flag for a “lowball-then-hold-hostage” scam. If you got one far above the high end, you’re being charged for premium-service tier (white-glove packing, insurance, expedited delivery) that you may not need.
How to cut your moving cost
The single biggest lever is when you move. Shifting from peak season (May 15 – Sept 15) to off-peak typically saves 15–25%. Within a month, the first and last few days are roughly 10% more expensive than the middle. Weekends are pricier than weekdays.
The second biggest lever for long-distance moves is purging before you pack. Long-distance moves are billed by weight, so the bookshelves, exercise equipment, and old appliances you’ve been meaning to get rid of are costing you real money per pound to bring along. Every 500 lbs you donate or sell saves roughly $200–$400 on a typical 1,000-mile move.
Pack yourself. Full packing service runs 30–40% on top of the base. Even handling just the non-fragile boxes yourself trims that meaningfully.
Get three written, binding (not “non-binding”) quotes. Non-binding quotes are how movers low-ball you on paper and then add charges on moving day. A binding estimate locks the price.
Verify the mover. Any company crossing state lines must have a USDOT number, registered at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s protectyourmove.gov database. Look up complaints before you book.
Once you have your number, plan the rest
A budget estimate is the first piece. After that comes the actual planning: when to call the utility companies, what to pack first, who to update with your new address, what to keep with you in the car versus load on the truck. Use the estimate from this calculator as the cost line in a full moving binder — that’s where you bring everything together: budget, checklist, packing list, change-of-address sheet.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move in 2026?
A local move averages $900–$2,800 for a 2–3 bedroom home and $400–$1,200 for a studio or 1-bedroom. A cross-country move for the same 2–3 bedroom home runs $5,500–$13,000 depending on whether you use a full-service mover, a POD container, or a DIY truck rental. Costs are roughly 15–25% higher between May 15 and September 15.
How much do movers cost per hour?
Local moving companies charge $50–$80 per mover per hour in 2026. A typical 2-bedroom move uses three movers for 5–7 hours, which works out to $750–$1,680 in labor plus a $100–$200 truck fee. Long-distance moves aren’t billed hourly — they’re billed by weight and distance, usually $0.50–$1.30 per pound depending on how far you’re going.
How are moving costs calculated?
Local movers calculate cost as (number of movers × hours × hourly rate) + truck fee + add-ons. Long-distance movers calculate cost as (weight in pounds × per-pound rate) + transport surcharges + add-ons, where the per-pound rate depends on the distance. POD container costs are calculated as (container rental + delivery + transport) + storage time and DIY truck rental is (truck rental × days) + (mileage × per-mile rate) + fuel + supplies. This calculator runs all four formulas in parallel so you can compare.
Are online moving cost calculators accurate?
They’re accurate for planning. They use industry-average rates against your home size, distance, and add-ons — which is enough to tell you whether your budget is in the ballpark and which method will be cheapest. They’re not a substitute for a real binding quote from a licensed mover, because actual prices vary by company, route, and season. Use the calculator number to plan your budget, then get three written quotes before booking.
How much does it cost to move across country?
A cross-country move (2,500–3,000 miles) averages $4,500–$7,500 for a 1-bedroom and $8,000–$13,000 for a 3-bedroom with full-service movers. POD containers run $4,000–$8,500 for the same moves; DIY one-way truck rental is the cheapest at $2,500–$7,500 depending on home size. Add $1,000–$2,000 if you’re shipping a car.
How much should I tip movers?
For local moves, $20–$50 per mover or 10–20% of the total bill is standard. For long-distance moves where the same crew loads and unloads, $50–$100 per mover. Tips are not expected for DIY truck rentals or POD container services because there’s no one to tip. The calculator has a 10/15/20% tip toggle for full-service moves.
When is the cheapest time to move?
A mid-month weekday between mid-September and April. The most expensive moving slot is the last weekend of June; the cheapest is a Tuesday or Wednesday in mid-October, mid-January, or mid-February. The peak-vs-off-peak difference is 15–25%, and the weekday-vs-weekend difference is another 5–12% on top.
Do I really not need to enter an email to use this calculator?
Correct. No email, no phone number, no name, no quote request. Everything runs in your browser. If you want to save your estimate, you can download it as a PDF, print it, or copy it — all without giving up any contact information.
