New Year’s Eve bingo
The party version works because New Year’s Eve has a long, awkward middle. People arrive early, midnight is hours away, and there is a stretch where nobody quite knows what to do with themselves. A card gives them something to watch for.
Nobody calls anything. Guests mark their own squares as the evening happens, which means it runs quietly underneath the party and needs no organizing from whoever is hosting.
The squares people enjoy most are about the room rather than the date. Somebody checks the time twice in a minute, a person announces their resolution unprompted, the music gets taken over, someone says next year will be different, a child is determined to stay awake and does not.
For a party that runs to midnight, play blackout rather than a single line. A line goes early and then the card is finished with three hours still to go.
Resolution bingo and vision board bingo
There is a second version of this game that has nothing to do with a party. Instead of things that happen to you, every square is something you want to do during the year, and you mark them off between January and December. It works better than a resolution list because completing one row still counts as a win even if half the card stays empty.

New Year’s bingo card ideas
For the party card, aim for about half certainties and half maybes. Fireworks, a countdown and a toast will definitely happen. Somebody spilling a drink, a phone call at midnight, or a neighbor setting something off in the street might not — and those are the squares that keep a card alive.
For the year-long card, the useful test is whether you could tell someone you had done it. Vague intentions do not make good squares. Specific, finishable things do.
Either way, the squares that work best are the ones particular to you. A generic card is fine. A card with your own household’s running jokes or your own actual plans is the one people keep.
New Year’s bingo for kids
Children rarely make it to midnight, and a card gives the earlier part of the evening some shape.
Use a 3×3 or 4×4 grid with things they can spot easily — balloons, a party hat, fireworks on television, confetti, someone hugging, a countdown starting. Pictures work better than words for anyone not reading confidently.
An early countdown works well alongside it: pick a time the children can reach, do a proper countdown then, and let the bingo card finish at the same moment. The game ending and the celebration happening together is what makes it feel like the real thing.
How to play
Give everyone a different card. For the party version, players mark their own squares as things happen, with no caller. For the year-long version, you mark your own card whenever you complete something.
Decide what counts as a win before you start. A single line is quick. Blackout takes the whole night, or in the case of the year card, most of the year.
For a household playing the goal version together, agree a date to compare cards — the end of June is a good halfway point, and it gives anyone who has stalled a reason to start again.
Printing your cards
Print one per person plus spares. Everything downloads as a PDF laid out for US Letter or A4.
For a party, four cards to a page is fine. For the year-long card, print one per page on decent paper — you are going to look at it for twelve months, and it is worth the sheet.
Laminating the year card is worth doing, with a dry-erase marker beside it. It survives a year on a fridge far better than paper does.
Put pens out with the party cards. Nobody hunts for one at eleven o’clock.
