What is Numerology?

Numerology dates back thousands of years. The earliest written records are from Egypt and Babylon. There is also proof of the use of numerology in Greece, China, Rome, and Japan thousands of years ago. You can also see examples in the Hebrew Kabbalah which is full of numerological significance. However, modern-day numerology is usually credited to the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras. He is often referred to as the “father of numerology”. Pythagorean Numerology is calculated by adding the values of each of the 26 letters of the alphabet which each have a value between 1 and 9. It is referred to as the Pythagorean alphabet.

Numerology is basically the study of numbers. It focuses on the single digits 1-9 and the master numbers 11, 22, and 33. Each number resonates on a different frequency and has a different vibration. These frequencies bring specific energy to your personality traits. If you study the numbers that are prominent in your life, you can learn more about yourself, including your strengths and challenges. This is helpful when you need to make life choices, such as choosing the best career for your unique personality. Numerology can help you find your life purpose and live your best life.

Your personal numbers are derived from your date of birth and your name (together they determine your numerological profile). Since your name also determines your personal numbers, people born on the same day will not necessarily have the same personality. Your name should include your birth name as it was given to you at birth. However, some types of numerology (such as Chaldean numerology) use a person’s current name instead of their birth name.

Since each number has both positive and negative traits and some are more harmonious together, you can use numerology to determine compatibility between people. When you know someone’s numerological profile you can understand them at a core level and how to best interact with them.

Numerology Chart

The five important numbers in your numerology chart are referred to as your Core Numbers. These numbers influence you more strongly than others. They are calculated from your full birth date and birth name.

Life Path Number

This is the most important and influential of the core numbers. It tells the path you will follow throughout your life and it indicates the talents, skills and abilities that will help you along this path.

It is calculated from your full birth date. See our free life path number calculator.

Birth Day Number

Your birthday number or birth number is the day of the month on which you were born. It can be any number from 1-31.

Personality Number

Your personality number indicates how other people perceive you and what you allow others to see. It helps you understand people’s mannerisms and behaviors and it also helps you understand how others view you. Each personality number has typical traits that people present to the world.

Your personality number is calculated by adding up the numerical value of each of the consonants in your full birth name. The result is reduced to a single-digit number, unless it is a master number in which case it isn’t reduced.

Expression Number or Destiny Number

Your expression number or destiny number determines your strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.

It is calculated by adding up the numerical value of each of the letters in your full birth name. The result is reduced to a single digit number, unless it is a master number in which case it isn’t reduced.

Soul Urge Number

Your Soul Urge Number represents the inner characteristics of a person. Some people refer to it as your heart’s desire number. Your soul number is what motivates and fulfills you inside. It will lead you to pursue your calling and your soul mission. When you express yourself in line with your soul number by pursuing your passions, you feel a deep sense of joy and satisfaction. On the other hand, when you are not doing what you love, you feel uninspired and unfulfilled.

Your personality number (as described above) is the “outer you” while your soul number is the “inner you.” If you are frequently misunderstood, it is likely that your personality and soul numbers are distinctly different.

It is calculated by adding up the numerical value of each of the vowels in your full birth name. The result is reduced to a single number, unless it is a master number in which case it isn’t reduced.

Numerology Systems

The numbers above are the five primary numbers that numerologists use. However, there are many more different types of numerology such as your attitude number which determines how you present yourself to the world and is calculated by adding the numerical value of your birth month and birth date without including your birth year.

Your maturity number is the sum of your life path number and your destiny number. This number will resonate more and more strongly as you mature.

Alphabet numerology

Alphabetical numerology assigns numerical values to the letters of the alphabet. It is used in different languages such as Greek numerals, Armenian numerals, and Hebrew letters. Gematria is the practice of assigning mystical meanings to words based on their numerical values. Kabbalah is based on the Hebrew alphabet which has only 22 letters. Each word has a different meaning which is calculated by the numerical value of the root letters in the word, not including the vowels. Kabbalah numerology uses a person’s given name and not their birthday. Each Kabbalah number has a different energy behind it.

Latin alphabet systems

Different methods of interpretation exist, including Chaldean, Pythagorean, Hebraic, Helyn Hitchcock’s method, Phonetic, Japanese, Arabic, and Indian (source).

Pythagorean numerology
pythagorean numerology

The most widely used form of numerology uses today is Pythagorean numerology which was developed over 2,500 years ago by the Greek mathematician Pythagoras. The
vibrational quality of any number or word is determined by adding together the numbers or numerical values of letters using the Pythagorean chart on the left.

You then “reduce” the resulting sum to a single-digit number by adding those numbers together, except for master numbers like 11, 22, or 33 (these are not reduced to single-digit numbers and stay as double digits). The result is then interpreted using established meanings.

Chaldean numerology

The Chaldeans were one of the first to recognize that all things are energy. Chaldean numerology connects the sounds that come out of your mouth to vibrations, vibrations to numbers, and numbers to letters. Whereas the Pythagorean numerology method assigned letters to numbers according to their position in the alphabet, Chaldean numerology assigned letters to numbers according to what they believed each letter’s vibration to be. The number 9 was excluded from the numerology table as it was considered sacred.

The Chaldean system provides each person with a personal “master plan” according to the vibrations and energies of your Life path. Your unique name has specific vibrations that tell a lot about you.

The Chaldean chart is the bases of all Chaldean numerology calculations. You can find a free copy to the left. The chart will help you discover the challenges, strengths, and lessons that are found in your name and Life path.
When doing calculations, use the name you are most commonly known by or use the most frequently. If you go by a nickname and not your birth name, then that is the name to use. Whereas other numerology systems use the name on your birth certificate, Chaldean numerology uses the name you use on a daily basis since that is the energy you are projecting.

Numerology should not be used as a sole basis for making important life decisions or used to replace professional advice and guidance in areas such as finance, health, or relationships. Instead, it can be seen as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth, used in conjunction with other forms of introspection and self-discovery.

It is always best to make informed decisions based on a combination of personal experience, sound judgment, and expert advice, rather than relying solely on any one form of divination or spirituality.
