When Life Gives You Lemons Make Lemonade
What is the “when life gives you lemons” meaning?
What does “when life gives you lemons” mean? The meaning of this expression is that when something bad happens (sour lemons), you should not just sit around and feel sorry for yourself. Instead, try to find the bright side of the situation and turn it into something positive (sweet lemonade). The phrase is often used to encourage people to find opportunities or to see the bright side of things even in challenging situations. It suggests that one can make the best out of a bad situation by finding creative solutions and taking advantage of the resources available to them. The idea is to use the lemons (representing the difficulties or obstacles) to make something sweet and enjoyable, like lemonade. This phrase suggests that people should use their ingenuity to turn their situation around and find a way to create something good for themselves.
The making lemonade out of lemons saying means that even when things don’t go the way we want them to, we can actually find a way to turn it into something positive by taking the obstacles and turning them into opportunities. There is a workbook below that will help guide you step-by-step on how to do this.
The idea is to view challenges and difficulties as opportunities for growth and improvement. Rather than becoming discouraged or defeated by setbacks, people are encouraged to approach challenges with a positive mindset, seeking solutions and making the best of the situation. By doing so, people can develop skills such as resilience, creativity, problem-solving, and resourcefulness, which can serve them well in both their personal and professional lives. Additionally, when people are able to find the silver lining in difficult situations, it can increase their overall happiness and satisfaction with life, contributing to their overall personal development. In essence, the phrase is a reminder to focus on the positive and to make the most of every opportunity, no matter how challenging it may seem.

Why Make Lemonade?
According to The Greatest Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, you can live a life free of all negative thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. There is no reason to suffer from negative thoughts. You can actually live a life of constant happiness.
All of your experiences are stored in your conscious mind and turned into beliefs (which could be true or untrue). These beliefs are then converted into thoughts. Often, these thoughts are limiting thoughts such as I won’t find real love, I don’t have enough of whatever it is I want, etc.
These negative thoughts and feelings take over our lives. It is not the negative situations that cause this but rather your negative thoughts about specific situations. Your negative thoughts will cause even more negative feelings and the cycle carries on.
To make matters worse, your negative thoughts will manifest negative situations in your life. The more negative thoughts you have, the more you’ll attract negativity in general.
Beliefs are thoughts that you have had so often that you now consider them facts. For example, the only way you can make more money is to work more hours. This isn’t factually correct, since there are many other ways to make money. However, you have heard this so many times that you consider this belief to be a fact even though it isn’t. In order to make lemonade out of lemons, it is important to get rid of these false and limiting beliefs. To dissolve these beliefs, you have to become consciously aware of them. Once you are aware and tell yourself that each of your beliefs is just a story you have told yourself then they will lose their power. These beliefs then dissolve together with the limiting thoughts that your mind has attached to them.
The Greatest Secret encourages us to question our negative feelings. Negative feelings stem from resistance to a situation or event.
According to Joseph Murphy, in The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, in order to be happy, you need to choose happiness. Negative thoughts are highly detrimental and can prevent you from attaining peace of mind. If you want to choose success and happiness, you have to visualize success and banish negative thoughts. This is easier said than done. The following workbook will help you do this step-by-step.
How do you make lemonade out of lemons?
Often our perception of a situation isn’t as clear as it could be and it includes our judgments and stories about the situation. When life hands you lemons, you can analyze the situation and find ways to turn the obstacles into opportunities.
OK, so when life gives you lemons how do you make lemonade?
Print the following workbook and let’s go through each step together.
Before you start, close your eyes and pay attention to your breath. Breathe slowly and deeply into your belly. Take three to five deep breaths. Make each one deeper than the previous one. Deep breathing is a simple technique that can help you calm down and think more clearly.
Describe the negative situation.
List each of the problems with the situation in the first column.
Think about the negative situation (lemons). Ask yourself how true is my perception of the situation. Am I holding old judgments or stories about the situation that are clouding my view? Fill out the 2nd column.
If you realize that the judgments are no longer true, acknowledge that they have served you in the past but they are no longer relevant. Release them and let them go. You don’t need them anymore. Now, without those judgments and stories reevaluate the situation.
Our judgments, stories, and resistance to a situation cause it to look more severe than it really is.
Accept the situation. Acknowledge that the situation is happening. You don’t have to be happy about it but understand that it is happening. Our resistance to a situation is what causes us stress, not the situation itself. We can then see the situation more clearly and now are more open to seeing potential solutions that we didn’t see before.
Think of a solution for each problem. Fill out the 3rd column.
Think back to before the situation changed and things “seemed” better. What were the problems with the previous situation that was supposedly better?
Rephrase the situation as an opportunity to solve previous problems and improve your situation.
Fake it till you make it
Many people suffer from negative thinking and negative feelings. They often feel as though there are problems everywhere they look which makes them feel overwhelmed. Some people try to shift the blame for their situation onto others or their circumstances, instead of trying to change it.
When you think positively, you set up positive forces that bring with them positive results. On the other hand, when you think negatively, you bring negative results.
If you suffer from negative thinking, then you’re more likely to experience negative outcomes since you create a self-fulfilling prophecy. This leads to a vicious circle that feels impossible to escape. However, it is possible to escape and change your outcome. All you need to do is to change your thinking. Once you change your thinking you will change your circumstances and your outcome. This is often easier said than done when you are feeling negative and overwhelmed. One of the ways to do this is to focus on gratitude and the positive things you do have in life. When you focus on these positive things you will find yourself changing your outlook.
Another way to change your thinking is to visualize the possible positive outcomes that you want for yourself. Close your eyes and imagine you are where you want to be. This will raise your spirits and your outlook. Visualization is a very powerful technique used by many people to reach their goals and become more optimistic.
Another way to feel more positive is to shift your focus from yourself to others. Find others in a worse situation than yourself and try to help them. You will find that helping others will make you feel better. And seeing others who are worse off than you will help you appreciate what you do have.
If you are feeling negative, sad or depressed then you should try to seek counseling. A certified counselor can support you and help you get through this challenge. You will come out stronger and ready to cope with life’s lemons.
Many people find that prayer and meditation also help them overcome negative feelings.
Negative thoughts are often related to the past or the future. You might be sad about something that happened in the past or worrying about something that might or might not happen in the future. When this happens, bring your thoughts to the present moment. How are you feeling right now? Are you safe? Are you in a comfortable spot? Focus on what you have right now. Don’t let your thoughts go to the past or the future. Bring them to the present – here and now.
Negative thinking is a habit that you have become used it. Some people look at the half-empty glass and others look at the half-full glass. It is just a matter of perspective. If you are used to thinking negative thoughts it is difficult to change your thinking but it certainly is possible. It is a bad habit like any other bad habit and it can be broken. Make a conscious effort to think positive thoughts as often as possible and eventually it will become a habit. In the beginning, it might not feel natural or even real but keep it up and it will eventually become natural!
